Foundation
A legal entity, often a non-profit, created to hold assets and fund work on a blockchain protocol that no single company owns.
Foundations exist because open networks still need someone to sign employment contracts, hold trademarks, administer grants, and absorb legal exposure. They are commonly incorporated in jurisdictions with established non-profit or foundation law, and they typically hold a portion of the token supply set aside at launch. Their relationship to the network is funding and stewardship rather than control: a foundation can propose changes and pay developers, but a change only takes effect if node operators and validators run the software. That gap between influence and authority is a recurring source of tension, since a foundation holding a large allocation also holds substantial voting power, and some foundations deliberately wind down or distribute their holdings to reduce it.

Several major protocols have a foundation that publishes grant reports and token holdings while the network itself is operated by independent validators the foundation does not employ.
