Definition HashrateNetwork hash rateHashing power

Hash Rate

How many guesses per second the machines securing a proof-of-work network are making, measured in hashes per second.

Hash rate is quoted in large units such as terahashes or exahashes per second, and it is the standard shorthand for how expensive it would be to overpower a proof-of-work chain. It is not directly observable, because nobody counts the machines: it is inferred from the current difficulty and how quickly blocks were actually found, which makes short-window estimates noisy. Hash rate responds to the economics of mining with a lag, since machines take time to deploy or shut down, and difficulty then adjusts to whatever capacity remains. Readers meet the figure in security comparisons between chains and in coverage of mining industry shifts.

In practice

A run of blocks found faster than the target makes an estimate of hash rate spike even when no new machines were switched on.

The common misunderstanding

Hash rate is an estimate rather than a measurement; it is inferred from difficulty and block timing, so day-to-day swings often reflect luck instead of hardware changes.

The figure this maps to

Hash Rate

An estimate of how much computing power miners are directing at a proof-of-work network.

Limits: The quantity is inferred and never measured, so short windows are noisy: because block discovery is random, an unlucky or lucky stretch of hours produces swings that look like miners leaving or arriving when nothing changed. Providers apply different smoothing windows, which is why published hash…
