Net Issuance

New units created over a period minus units destroyed, showing whether supply actually grew or shrank.

Net issuance exists because gross issuance alone overstates supply growth on any network with a burn mechanism. On Ethereum the comparison is between issuance paid to validators under proof-of-stake and the base fee destroyed by the EIP-1559 fee mechanism introduced in 2021; when demand for block space is high enough, burns exceed issuance and supply falls over that period. The figure is period-dependent and activity-dependent by construction, so a week of heavy usage and a quiet week can point in opposite directions. It is normally shown as units per period or annualized as a percentage of supply.

In der Praxis

After Ethereum's 2022 transition to proof-of-stake, staking issuance and the EIP-1559 base-fee burn are netted over a period to give a single supply change figure that can be positive or negative.

Das häufige Missverständnis

A period of negative net issuance is not a permanent property of an asset; it depends on network activity and reverses when demand for block space falls.

Net Issuance

New tokens created each day minus tokens destroyed, so supply growth after burns.

Limits: It is the small difference between two large numbers measured under different conventions, so it carries the error of both series and can change sign because of a definitional choice rather than a real event. A single 30-day window is short enough that seasonal patterns in blockspace demand…
