Node Client Diversity

How evenly a network's nodes are spread across independently written software implementations of the same rules.

Several teams write clients for the same protocol, and Ethereum deliberately maintains multiple execution clients such as Geth, Nethermind, Besu, Erigon and Reth alongside consensus clients including Prysm, Lighthouse, Teku, Nimbus and Lodestar. If a bug affects a minority client, the nodes running it fall out of sync while the rest of the network continues correctly, so the damage is contained to those operators. If one client runs a supermajority of stake, the same bug can finalize an incorrect chain or cause mass correlated slashing, which is why diversity is treated as a security property rather than a preference. Bitcoin's ecosystem is dominated by a single implementation, and the trade-offs of that choice are debated on different terms, since a consensus split between implementations is itself a risk.

In practice

Ethereum has experienced incidents where a bug in one execution client caused nodes running it to follow a different chain while nodes on other clients continued correctly.

The common misunderstanding

Client diversity is not about competing chains or competing rules; every client implements the same specification, and the point is that their bugs are unlikely to coincide.
