Definition fiat off-rampcash-out

Off-Ramp

A service that converts digital assets back into government-issued money, paid out to a bank account or card.

Off-ramps are usually the same institutions that provide on-ramps, but the friction is different in kind: withdrawals attract source-of-funds questions, account limits, banking review, and occasional account closure, and processing can pause over weekends and holidays. In practice the off-ramp is the binding constraint on using digital assets for cross-border payments, because a corridor is only as usable as the recipient's ability to convert into local currency. Availability depends on local licensing regimes and on the willingness of banks to serve the provider, which varies widely by country. Holding an asset guarantees the ability to transfer it, not the ability to convert it on demand.

In practice

A transfer can arrive on chain in minutes and still take days to reach a bank account, because the conversion step runs on banking hours and compliance review.

The common misunderstanding

Access to an off-ramp is not guaranteed by holding an asset; banking availability, limits, and compliance checks can delay or block conversion.
