Rails differ along a few concrete axes: operating hours, settlement finality, cost structure, reversibility, and who is allowed to connect. Card networks and domestic bank systems offer dispute resolution and chargebacks but operate through intermediaries and, in many countries, defined business hours. A public blockchain carrying stablecoins settles continuously, charges a network fee that varies with congestion rather than with transfer size, and is effectively irreversible once confirmed, which removes chargeback risk for the recipient and removes recourse for the sender. Compliance obligations follow the parties rather than the rail, so identity checks and transfer-information rules still apply to regulated businesses using blockchain rails.
