Development Stars/Forks count

Repository Stars and Forks

How many people have bookmarked or copied the project's public code repository.

On public code hosts, a star is a bookmark placed by an account and a fork is a copy of the repository taken so that someone can modify it or propose changes back. Both counts accumulate over the life of a repository. They describe attention from developers and, in the case of forks, the extent to which the code has been copied, which may be for contribution or for building something separate.

How it is computed

stars on the primary tracked repository + forks of that repository

Where it misleads

Stars almost never decline, so the count measures cumulative attention across a project's entire life rather than current interest, and an inactive project from years ago will outrank an active new one. Both counts can be inflated at negligible cost through promotional campaigns or purchased accounts, and the code host does not distinguish those from organic activity. A fork is created by anyone copying the code, including teams launching a near-identical competing chain, so a high fork count can reflect cloning rather than collaboration. Choosing which repository represents a multi-repository ecosystem is a judgment call that changes the number substantially, and a protocol with several independent client implementations has no single correct answer.

Reading a high or a low value

Higher counts mean the repository has accumulated more bookmarks and copies over its lifetime; lower counts mean fewer. Because both counts accumulate and rarely fall, they describe history more than they describe current activity.
