Summed from each fund's published holdings. Unlike assets under management it does not move with price, so it separates flows from revaluation.
Where it misleads
Holdings are published with a lag that differs by issuer, and only US-listed products in our source are included.
Reading a high or a low value
A rise means units were added to the wrappers; price changes alone cannot move it.
