How many transactions are queued and waiting to be included in a block.
The mempool is the backlog of broadcast but unconfirmed transactions. It grows when demand for block space runs ahead of supply, which is what pushes fees up.
Where it misleads
It is a live snapshot that changes minute to minute, and each node keeps its own view, so no two observers see exactly the same number.
Reading a high or a low value
A persistently deep backlog and rising fees describe the same congestion from two angles.
