The spread of market-cap-to-fees ratios
As of 30 August 2026, the market-cap-to-fees figures — where fees are annualized from the trailing 30 days — range from 2.75x for Uniswap to 18,991x for Bitcoin. A wide ratio means that, at the current annualized fee run-rate, the market capitalization is a large multiple of those fees; a narrow ratio means the opposite. What these ratios do not imply, by themselves, is anything about growth trajectories, fee volatility, or the sustainability of the trailing 30-day period as a representative baseline. A single atypical month — unusually high or low on-chain activity — can shift an annualized figure materially without any structural change in the network.
Fee retention: take rate as a second dimension
Several assets in the dataset retain all fees they generate. TRON, Canton, Hyperliquid, and Avalanche each carry a take rate of 100%, meaning annualized revenue equals annualized fees as of the observation date. At the other end, Uniswap retains approximately 8.9% of the fees flowing through its protocol, passing the remainder to liquidity providers; its annualized fees of roughly $1.12 billion therefore contrast with annualized revenue of approximately $99 million. Gram (prev. Toncoin) retains roughly 50%, while Ethereum retains about 24.6%. Reading only the market-cap-to-fees ratio without the take rate can present a misleading picture of what accrues to the protocol or token itself versus what is redistributed to other participants.
Chain-basis versus application-basis figures are not comparable
The dataset mixes two distinct accounting scopes. Assets labeled chain: — including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and others — capture fees paid to the base-layer network. Assets labeled application: — including Uniswap, Aave, Chainlink, and Rain — capture fees flowing through a specific protocol deployed on top of a chain. An application's fees do not include the underlying chain fees paid by its users; a chain's fees do not isolate the contribution of any single application. Comparing Uniswap's $1.12 billion in annualized application-basis fees directly against Ethereum's $122 million in chain-basis fees, for instance, would conflate two different scopes of economic measurement. Each grouping must be read within its own accounting boundary.
Why these multiples differ from equity multiples
The single largest reason a reader should not treat market-cap-to-fees as equivalent to a price-to-sales or EV/revenue equity multiple is that token holders typically have no legal or contractual claim on fee cash flows. In traditional equity analysis, the multiple connects a security's price to revenues that shareholders have a defined residual claim over. Here, the relationship between fee generation and token-holder benefit depends entirely on the specific — and often evolving — governance and tokenomic design of each protocol. Bitcoin provides no such mechanism at all; its fee figure reflects miner compensation, not a distributable stream to BTC holders. This structural difference means the multiples describe a ratio of two observable numbers without implying the economic relationship that the same ratio would carry in an equity context.
