What the fee-generating assets look like on 13 September 2026

Fee data as of 13 September 2026 reveals wide dispersion in market-cap-to-fees multiples across fourteen digital assets, with structural differences that complicate direct comparison.

Spread of Market-Cap-to-Fees Multiples

Across the fourteen assets observed on 13 September 2026, the market-cap-to-fees ratio (annualized from the trailing 30 days) spans from 1.9x for Uniswap to 19,004x for Bitcoin, a range of roughly four orders of magnitude. Intermediate readings include 110.5x for TRON, 380.9x for BNB, and 5,622x for Rain. A wide multiple means that, at the point-in-time market cap recorded, each dollar of annualized fee activity corresponds to a large number of dollars of network value — and nothing more. It does not indicate that fees will grow, shrink, or converge toward any level; the figure is a descriptive ratio, not a forecast. A narrow multiple carries the same caveat in the other direction.

Fee Retention: Take-Rate Variation

Several assets retain all fees they generate: TRON, Hyperliquid, Avalanche, and Canton each show a take rate of 100% (annualized from the trailing 30 days), meaning protocol revenue equals gross fees in the measured period. Others pass the majority of fees to outside participants. Uniswap retains only 8.1% of its $2.10 billion annualized fees, with protocol revenue of $171.2 million. Aave retains 13.8% of $417.1 million in annualized fees. Where a large share of fees flows to liquidity providers or validators rather than to the protocol itself, market-cap-to-fees and market-cap-to-revenue diverge substantially, and using the gross-fee multiple alone would overstate the economic claim the token represents.

Chain-Basis vs. Application-Basis Figures Are Not Interchangeable

The accounting basis field distinguishes two measurement conventions in this dataset. Assets such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and TRON report under chain: accounting, capturing fees paid to the network layer. Assets such as Uniswap, Aave, Chainlink, and Rain report under application: accounting, capturing fees paid to a specific protocol deployed on top of a chain. A user transacting on Uniswap generates fees counted in both the Ethereum chain figures and the Uniswap application figures simultaneously; they are not additive, and they are not measuring the same economic layer. Comparing Uniswap's market-cap-to-fees of 1.9x directly to Ethereum's 2,123.6x conflates two different scopes of measurement. Readers should treat the two cohorts separately.

Why These Multiples Are Not Equity Multiples

The single most important structural difference between a market-cap-to-fees ratio here and a price-to-sales or price-to-earnings ratio in equity analysis is the absence of a legal claim. Holding a token does not, in general, confer a contractual right to the fee stream the protocol generates. Fee accrual mechanisms — burns, staking distributions, buybacks — vary by protocol, change via governance, and may not exist at all. Bitcoin, for instance, reports null for revenue, reflecting no protocol-level retention mechanism in the data supplied. Without a enforceable claim on cash flows, the multiple describes a ratio of market value to on-chain activity, not a valuation of a distributable income stream, and should be read strictly in those terms.
