Inside the Layer 2 (L2) sector, 19 September 2026
The Layer 2 sector tracked 35 constituents with a combined market cap of roughly $8.95 billion as of 19 September 2026.
Sector Composition and Concentration
As of 19 September 2026, the Layer 2 (L2) sector covered 35 constituents with an aggregate market capitalisation of $8.95 billion. The 15 largest members listed here account for the substantial majority of that total, and concentration is pronounced: the two largest constituents, OKB ($2.51 billion) and Mantle ($2.10 billion), together represent roughly 51% of the full sector figure. Arbitrum adds a further $1.41 billion and POL (ex-MATIC) $1.13 billion, meaning four names alone account for approximately 79% of sector market cap. The remaining constituents thin out rapidly, with several members carrying market caps below $100 million.
Fee Stream Coverage
Among the 15 largest members, fee data — expressed as annualized figures derived from the trailing 30 days — is available for 10 constituents and absent for 5 (Derive, Optimism, ADI, SOON, and Immutable's figure is present but very small). Where fees are reported, the range is wide: POL (ex-MATIC) records the highest annualized fee figure at $27.99 million, while Lisk records $7,754 and Immutable $5,438. The absence of fee data for several constituents means the sector-level picture of economic activity is incomplete, and aggregations across members are not directly comparable on this dimension.
Distance from All-Time Highs
The spread of drawdowns from each constituent's all-time high is notable. Over the trailing 7 days to 19 September 2026, all 15 listed members posted positive 7-day returns except Prom (–7.8%), yet the distance-from-ATH figures tell a different story about longer-term price history. ADI sits closest to its record at –0.87% below its all-time high, and Derive at –27.49%. At the other end, Starknet is –98.99% below its all-time high, Optimism –97.47%, and Immutable –98.50%. Several other members — Arbitrum, POL (ex-MATIC), Stacks, Lisk, ZKsync, SOON, and Linea — all sit between –91% and –96% from their respective peaks. These figures describe historical price levels only and carry no implied direction.
What the Sector Label Does and Does Not Convey
The Layer 2 label groups assets on the basis of a broad architectural relationship to an underlying base-layer blockchain, but it does not enforce uniformity of design, purpose, or economic model across constituents. The 35 tracked members include optimistic rollups, zero-knowledge rollups, validiums, and networks with distinct consensus mechanisms. Fee-generation models differ: some protocols collect sequencer fees, others derive revenue from different on-chain activities, and some have no reported fee stream at all. Market capitalisation reflects the token, not necessarily the protocol's throughput or usage. Consequently, the sector aggregate describes a collection of heterogeneous instruments sharing a thematic label, and cross-constituent comparisons require care about which specific attributes are actually being compared.
