Inside the Proof of Stake (PoS) sector, 27 October 2026
A look at the Proof of Stake sector's concentration, fee coverage, distance from all-time highs, and the limits of its shared label.
Sector Composition and Concentration
As of 27 October 2026, the Proof of Stake (PoS) sector covers 45 constituents with a combined market capitalisation of $523.1 billion. Concentration is pronounced: the single largest member, Ethereum, accounts for approximately 53.9% of sector market cap ($281.95 billion), and the top two members together represent roughly 72.4%. The remaining 43 constituents share the balance. Any sector-level aggregate is therefore heavily shaped by the behaviour of a small number of large-cap members, and readers should treat sector-wide figures with that weighting structure in mind.
Fee Stream Coverage
Of the 15 largest members shown, 14 carry an annualised fee figure derived from the trailing 30 days to 27 October 2026. One member, Polkadot, has a null fee entry, meaning no fee figure was available for that period; no inference about the reason should be drawn from the data alone. Among those with measurable fees, the annualised figures span a wide range — from below $10,000 (Algorand at roughly $6,700 and Gate at roughly $4,600) to above $300 million (Solana at approximately $301.4 million). The presence of a fee stream of any size does not itself indicate anything about the quality or sustainability of that stream; it records only what the trailing 30-day window captured.
Distance from All-Time Highs
The percent below all-time high figures as of 27 October 2026 reveal a wide spread across the largest members. TRON and Hyperliquid sit closest to their prior peaks, at -24.1% and -20.7% respectively. Several others are substantially further away: Cardano at -93.4%, Avalanche at -94.0%, Polkadot at -98.2%, Algorand at -97.1%, and Cosmos Hub at -96.3%. These all-time highs were set at different points in time and under different market conditions, so the distance metric describes magnitude only — it does not establish comparability of the drawdown experiences across members.
What the Sector Label Does and Does Not Convey
The label Proof of Stake refers to a shared consensus mechanism: validators commit staked capital rather than computational work to participate in block production. That shared technical property is the basis for grouping these 45 assets together. However, the label does not imply that the underlying networks serve the same purpose, target the same users, operate under the same governance structures, or generate fees through the same mechanisms. The sector contains general-purpose smart-contract platforms, application-specific chains, and exchange tokens, among others. A reader using this sector as an analytical category should note that the PoS label describes how these networks reach consensus, not what they do or how their economic models compare. Treating the group as homogeneous beyond the consensus-mechanism dimension would go beyond what the classification itself supports.
