Because transaction histories are public and permanent, intermediaries screen incoming deposits against sanctions lists and analytics heuristics, and a deposit connected to a flagged address can be frozen or returned even when the depositor did nothing wrong. Sanctioning a smart contract rather than a person extends this to anyone who used it, including for ordinary privacy reasons, and the taint travels forward through subsequent transfers. Centrally issued stablecoins add a direct mechanism, since the issuer can freeze balances at specific addresses on request. Privacy-preserving assets face the mirror problem: their properties make screening difficult, which leads some regulated venues to avoid listing them at all.

Look at whether addresses associated with the asset appear on sanctions lists, how major venues describe their screening policies, and whether the protocol offers compliance features such as viewing keys or association sets. For privacy assets, listing status by venue and jurisdiction is the most direct measure of practical access.
