Wash-Traded Volume
Reported trading volume can include trades where the same party stands on both sides, making an asset or a venue look more liquid than it is.
How it happens
There is no consolidated tape and no audited print in digital-asset markets, so reported volume is whatever a venue chooses to publish. Incentives to inflate it are structural: ranking on data aggregators, listing negotiations, token rewards paid for trading activity, and fee schedules with zero-fee or rebate tiers that make self-matching nearly costless. The same applies to non-fungible tokens, where a holder can sell an item between two wallets they control to manufacture a sale price and a volume record. The result is that volume, one of the most quoted figures in the sector, is often the least verifiable, and any ratio built on top of it inherits that weakness.
What you can actually observe
Cross-check volume against order-book depth and against settlement observed on-chain, since real flow generally leaves traces in deposits, withdrawals, and transfers. Examine trade size distributions for unnatural regularity, spreads that are implausibly tight for the stated volume, and fee schedules that reward volume directly. Note which venues a data provider includes in its filtered or trusted volume metric, and how much of the total disappears when the filter is applied.
Precedent
A 2019 analysis submitted to United States regulators concluded that only a small fraction of reported bitcoin spot volume came from venues whose trading patterns appeared genuine.
What makes it more or less material
Consider the gap between reported and filtered volume, whether the main venues pay rewards for trading, whether volume is consistent with depth and on-chain settlement, and whether volume spikes coincide with listing or ranking events.
