Numeraire (NMR) is the native token of the Numerai platform, a crowd-sourced hedge fund that invites data scientists around the world to submit machine-learning predictions on financial markets. The platform claims to address the problem of aggregating diverse predictive models without revealing the underlying data or strategies. It is aimed at quantitative analysts and developers who want to compete in tournaments by staking NMR on the accuracy of their forecasts.

Numeraire lives on the Ethereum blockchain and functions as a staking instrument within the Erasure protocol, which is recorded here as its fundamental basis. Participants stake NMR tokens on their tournament submissions; if a model performs well, the participant earns more NMR, and if it performs poorly, a portion of the staked tokens can be destroyed, a mechanism known as slashing. The token does not power a standalone blockchain and carries no consensus algorithm of its own, as it operates entirely as an ERC-20 asset on Ethereum.
