24-Hour Trading Volume
Total dollar value of trades in the asset across covered venues during the last 24 hours.
Volume is the sum of the notional value of every trade the provider observes across the venues and pairs it includes, over a rolling 24-hour window rather than a calendar day. It is the standard first check on whether a quoted price reflects a market or a handful of prints. Which venues, which pairs, and whether derivatives count are all provider decisions.
How it is computed
sum of trade notional across included venues and pairs over the trailing 24 hours
Where it misleads
Exchange-reported volume has a long documented history of inflation through wash trading and zero-fee or rebate-funded incentive programs, and providers apply their own opaque filters to decide which venues to trust. Coverage differs fundamentally between sources: some include perpetual futures and options notional, some include decentralized venue swaps, some count only centralized spot, so identical labels describe different measurements. Order flow routed through an aggregator can be counted at both the aggregator and the underlying pool. The rolling window means a single large treasury transfer executed through an automated market maker can dominate a small asset's volume for a full day.
The equity comparison, and why it fails
Reported share volume; US equity volume is printed to a consolidated tape under regulatory obligation, which makes systematic inflation of the kind seen at digital-asset venues far harder to sustain.
Reading a high or a low value
Higher volume relative to an asset's own history indicates more dollars changed hands over the window. Volume measures activity, not direction, and a rise does not indicate which way price moved.
