Quantum Resistant Ledger (QRL) is a Layer 1 blockchain launched on 26 June 2018, designed from the ground up to withstand attacks from both classical computers and quantum computers. It was created by Peter Waterland, who identified that widely used signature schemes in networks like Bitcoin and Ethereum could be broken by sufficiently powerful quantum hardware. QRL uses the RandomX proof-of-work consensus algorithm, meaning miners compete to validate blocks and add them to the chain roughly every one minute. Rather than relying on the elliptic-curve cryptography used by most blockchains, QRL employs hash-based signature schemes specifically chosen for their resistance to quantum attacks. The QRL token is the native unit used to pay for transactions and to reward miners who secure the network.
