Exchange-Traded Product Assets Under Management

Exchange-traded products give investors exposure to a digital asset through a security traded on a conventional exchange. In a spot product, an authorized participant delivers cash or the asset to create shares, and a custodian holds the underlying on the fund's behalf; redemption reverses the process. This metric sums the market value of the underlying assets held across the products the site tracks for a given asset. It measures assets held in custody by regulated vehicles, not money raised by any issuer of the asset.

Waar het misleidt

Product types are frequently summed when they should not be: spot trusts, futures-based funds, physically backed European products, and closed-end trusts trading at a discount or premium give materially different exposure, and futures-based products may hold no underlying asset at all. The total moves with price, so it can rise substantially while no new shares have been created, which is why flows and assets under management must be read as separate series. Issuers report on different valuation cut-offs and with different lags, and cross-listed products can be counted twice by trackers that key on listings rather than on funds. Assets held by a product are custodied, so they typically sit outside the exchange-traded supply while still counting in circulating supply.

The analogy holds better here than for most digital-asset metrics, with one difference that matters: an exchange-traded product holds a bearer asset in custody rather than shares in an issuer, so its holdings supply no capital to any entity and carry no voting rights.
