Hash Rate
An estimate of how much computing power miners are directing at a proof-of-work network.
Proof-of-work security comes from miners repeatedly hashing candidate blocks until one meets the difficulty target. Nobody can observe that work directly, so hash rate is inferred from how quickly blocks are being found relative to the current difficulty and is reported in hashes per second, commonly in exahashes for Bitcoin. It is the standard scale measure of the physical resources committed to securing such a chain.

The quantity is inferred and never measured, so short windows are noisy: because block discovery is random, an unlucky or lucky stretch of hours produces swings that look like miners leaving or arriving when nothing changed. Providers apply different smoothing windows, which is why published hash rate charts disagree with each other on the same day for the same chain. Equal hash rate at two points in time does not mean equal energy consumption or equal cost, because mining hardware efficiency improves continuously. The metric exists only for proof-of-work chains and is undefined for proof-of-stake networks, including Ethereum after the 2022 Merge.

A higher estimate means more computational work is being applied to block production and a lower estimate means less. Short-term movements are frequently estimation noise rather than changes in deployed hardware.
