Take Rate (Revenue Share of Fees)
The share of total user fees the protocol keeps instead of paying out to liquidity providers or validators.
Take rate expresses the fee split as a single percentage: total fees at the bottom, retained protocol revenue at the top. A decentralized exchange that sends most of each swap fee to liquidity providers has a low take rate; a protocol with no supply side to compensate can retain everything. It describes how a protocol is configured, and it is normally set by an explicit parameter in the contracts.
How it is computed
(protocol revenue over the last 30 days / protocol fees over the last 30 days) x 100
Where it misleads
In most cases this is a governance parameter rather than an outcome, so it reveals a design choice and not operating efficiency. It reads near zero for blockchains that pass all gas to validators and near one hundred percent for protocols with no supply side, and neither reading is comparable to the other as performance. Where the numerator and denominator are produced by different adapters or sampled at different timestamps, the ratio can exceed one hundred percent or turn negative, which is a data artifact. Protocols that compensate suppliers with newly issued tokens instead of fees show a high take rate precisely because the cost was moved off the fee line.
The equity comparison, and why it fails
Gross margin, or a marketplace take rate. The analogy fails because no cost structure sits behind it: it is a splitting rule written into a smart contract that token holders can vote to change at any time.
Reading a high or a low value
A high value means a large share of fees is retained at the protocol level and a low value means most fees flow to suppliers. Read it as a description of the fee split rather than as a measure of quality.
