What the fee-generating assets look like on 21 October 2026

Fee-stream data as of 21 October 2026 reveals wide dispersion in market-cap-to-fees ratios and retention rates across fourteen digital assets.

Market-Cap-to-Fees: A Wide and Uneven Spread

As of 21 October 2026, the market-cap-to-fees ratio across the fourteen assets in this dataset spans from 3.6x (Uniswap) to 18,676x (Bitcoin), with fees annualized from the trailing 30 days in both cases. That range alone is not interpretable as a signal of relative quality or pricing efficiency. A wide ratio can reflect low absolute fee generation, a large market capitalization, or both simultaneously — the ratio collapses those two variables into one number without separating them. Conversely, a narrow ratio such as Solana's 185x or TRON's 108x (both annualized from the trailing 30 days) describes a mathematical relationship between a point-in-time market cap and a short-window fee run-rate, nothing more.

Fee Retention: What Stays in the Protocol

Several assets in this dataset report both fees and revenue, where revenue represents the portion retained by the protocol rather than distributed elsewhere. The take-rate figures illustrate sharp differences. TRON and Canton each record a take-rate of 100.0% (annualized from the trailing 30 days), meaning all fees measured flow to the protocol by the accounting definition applied. Chainlink's take-rate stands at 97.8% on the same basis. At the other end, Uniswap retains approximately 8.2% of its fees, with the remainder flowing to liquidity providers rather than to a protocol treasury. BNB retains roughly 10.0%. These differences are structural, not incidental, and they mean that comparing gross-fee multiples across high- and low-retention assets conflates economically distinct arrangements.

Chain-Basis vs. Application-Basis Figures Are Not Comparable

This dataset mixes two accounting scopes explicitly flagged in the source data. Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and others are measured on a chain basis, capturing all fees settled on that network. Uniswap is measured on an application basis (Uniswap V3 specifically), capturing only fees generated by that protocol, which itself runs on top of Ethereum. Chainlink is measured on an application basis via CCIP. A chain-basis figure and an application-basis figure cannot be ranked against each other without acknowledging that one includes the full economic surface of a network while the other captures a single application layer. Placing Uniswap's 3.6x market-cap-to-fees ratio beside Bitcoin's 18,676x in the same column does not describe comparable phenomena.

Why These Multiples Are Not Equity Multiples

The single most important reason these ratios cannot be read as equity-style price-to-earnings or price-to-sales multiples is that fee generation does not accrue to token holders through a defined, legally enforceable claim. In equity markets, a revenue or earnings multiple rests on the premise that residual cash flows can, in principle, be distributed to shareholders via dividends or buybacks under a governed legal structure. No equivalent mechanism is universally present here: token holders' relationship to fee streams varies by protocol design, is subject to governance change, and carries no standardized legal standing. The market-cap-to-fees figures in this dataset describe a ratio between a market price aggregate and an on-chain activity measure — they describe activity intensity relative to capitalization, not a yield or a claim.
