FDV / Annualized Fees

Fully diluted valuation multiplies the current price by the maximum or total token supply rather than by the tokens circulating today. Dividing that by annualized fees shows the usage multiple a reader would face if all remaining tokens, including team allocations, investor vesting and future protocol issuance, already existed. For young projects with most of the supply still locked, this figure can be several times the market-capitalization version. It is the more conservative of the two framings and the more sensitive to supply-schedule assumptions.

How it is computed

(price x fully diluted token supply) / (total protocol fees over the last 30 days x 365/30)

Where it misleads

There is no single definition of fully diluted supply: some providers use the coded maximum, some use current total supply, and some use supply after all published vesting completes, so the same token can carry three different FDVs. Assets with no maximum supply, including Ethereum after the transition to proof-of-stake, have no natural FDV at all, and whatever a provider substitutes changes the meaning of the ratio silently. The calculation assumes tokens that do not yet exist arrive at today's price and contribute no additional fees, which is internally inconsistent given that future issuance often pays for the activity that generates fees. Tokens scheduled to unlock a century from now are treated identically to tokens unlocking next month.

The equity comparison, and why it fails

The analogy fails because option and convertible counts are disclosed in audited filings with strike prices and expiry dates, whereas token emission follows code and governance decisions with no filing, no counterparty, and no legal claim on the fee stream in the denominator.

Reading a high or a low value

A high value means the eventual full supply is priced at a large multiple of the fees currently paid; a low value means the reverse. The gap between this and the market-capitalization version measures how much of the supply is not yet outstanding, not anything about usage.
